Summer Decorating Tips
Whether you are thinking of putting your home on the market this summer or realizing that your winter design needs a fresh summer overhaul, Golden Key Relocation Concierge can help you, with a much needed, “Summer Decorating Spruce Up“.
To help you make this seasonal transition as effortless as possible, we have identified easy summer decorating ideas for each of your rooms, keeping it simple, fresh and inviting. When we think of summer, we are reminded of sunshine, days that stay lighter longer, lightning bugs, no school, vacations and wanting to relax with a good book by the beach. Our Golden Key Relocation Concierge tips invite you to relax, hear the sounds of the ocean and smell the fragrance from fresh cut flowers.
Front Porch
If you are selling your house, or just want to impress friends and neighbors, first impressions are important so it starts right at the front door. Hang a simple summer wreath of dried hydrangeas, lilacs or lavender. The smell of real dried flowers is a welcome invitation for all who walk through the door. Add a new “Welcome” mat, potted or hanging plants with cascading bright flowers, or perhaps your patio is big enough to add a porch swing or a white bench dressed with colorful pillows. If you are feeling bold and adventuresome, paint the front door using the new ” in” colors for the summer; a fresh yellow, pastel blue or a seafoam green.
Entry Way/ Foyer
As you walk into your house, it’s easy to add some simple summer decorating touches to an area that can bring both function and design. Often the entry table becomes the catch-all for the keys, dog leash, mail and shoes. Think about adding lovely light wicker baskets underneath the table for shoes, a silver mirrored tray for the keys or mail, a white porcelain urn for umbrellas. If the area is small, hang a framed mirror and if dark, add a hanging pendant lamp or table lamp.
Living Room
Take a look around. Do you see heavy winter colors and thick textures that make you immediately want to nestle in front of a fireplace? If yes, we suggest changing to more of an easy, breezy look; switch to cool neutrals like a wheat linen slipcover for your sofa, overstuffed pillows with the latest “in” colors of poppy, teal or perhaps even a nautical theme of navy and bold red. Remove the heavy drapes and add sheer curtains, roll up that oriental rug and replace it with a light cotton stripe or seagrass rug, use wicker baskets as containers for your plants, and accessorize by stacking books in your bookcase and adding shells, a glass candle or a potted succulent on top.
Kitchen
Without dipping too much into your checkbook, simple summer decorating additions for a fresh kitchen look can easily be attained by changing out the soap dispenser in white porcelain or clear glass. Replace canisters with glass mason jars and fill with sugar, teabags or coffee beans. Add a summer-themed linen dishtowel on your oven handle. Fill a tall clear vase with lemons and add bright sunflowers or a few sprigs of greenery.
Dining Room/Family Room
Summer is a time for those last-minute invites with friends to hang out for dinner and cocktails. So that you are ready for your guests, set your table with a wheat linen table runner or placemats that evoke a seaside theme in lovely teals and blues. Continue the beach theme, using coral colored napkins to add that pop of color adorned with a seashell napkin holder. Dress up the table with corresponding colored plates and simple crystal wine glasses.
Master Bedroom or Guest Bedroom
Just as you pack up your winter apparel, the same practice can be applied to your décor; in particular, the heavy comforter, velvet pillows and thick drapes. There are so many lighter summer options in the stores to choose from. We suggest a simple cotton white duvet draped with a pastel or textured cotton throw at the end of the bed. Of course, there are never enough pillows to toss on the bed; add the extra touch by incorporating some down-filled pillows in the stylish soft greys, light blue denims or pale rose tones. Replace heavy curtains with white or light beige airy sail cloth drapes.
Patio/Backyard/Pool Area
Pool parties, drinks on the patio and bar-b-ques all mean it is time to power wash the deck, clean off the lounge chairs and scrub down the grill. It is also a good time to string up some mini deck lights, generating a fun and warm ambiance at night. Decorate with splashes of summer color with new deck chair pillows, purchase a colorful table umbrella and bring the beach to your backyard with bright blue Adirondack chairs. To soften the bare feet, put down an outdoor rug that incorporates the same fun colors of your pillows.
